چکیده

This study presents the results of applying automated speech scoring technology to English spoken responses provided by non-native children in the context of an English proficiency assessment for middle school students. The assessment contains three diverse task types designed to measure a student’s English communication skills, and an automated scoring system was used to extract features and build scoring models for each task. The results show that the automated scores have a correlation of r = 0.70 with human scores for the Read Aloud task, which matches the human-human agreement level. For the two tasks involving spontaneous speech, the automated scores obtain correlations of r = 0.62 and r = 0.63 with human scores, which represents a drop of 0.08 0.09 from the humanhuman agreement level. When all 5 scores from the assessment for a given student are aggregated, the automated speaker-level scores show a correlation of r = 0.78 with human scores, compared to a human-human correlation of r = 0.90. The challenges of using automated spoken language assessment for children are discussed, and directions for future improvements are proposed.

SpeechraterTM: a construct-driven approach to scoring spontaneous non-native speech

This paper presents an overview of the SpeechRater system of Educational Testing Service (ETS), a fully operational automated scoring system for non-native spontaneous speech employed in a practice context. This novel system stands in contrast to most prior speech scoring systems which focus on fairly predictable, low entropy speech such as read-aloud speech or short and predictable responses. ...

Non-English Response Detection Method for Automated Proficiency Scoring System

This paper presents a method for identifying non-English speech, with the aim of supporting an automated speech proficiency scoring system for non-native speakers. The method uses a popular technique from the language identification domain, a single phone recognizer followed by multiple languagedependent language models. This method determines the language of a speech sample based on the phonot...

Self-Adaptive DNN for Improving Spoken Language Proficiency Assessment

Automated assessment of language proficiency of a test taker’s spoken response regarding its content, vocabulary, grammar and context depends largely upon how well the input speech can be recognized. While state-of-the-art, deep neural net based acoustic models have significantly improved the recognition performance of native speaker’s speech, good recognition is still challenging when the inpu...
